MicroRNAs (abbreviated miRNAs) are a class of small non-coding, endogenous RNAs (containing about 21-25 nucleotides) that functions in RNA silencing and gene expression regulation. They play an important regulatory role by targeting specific mRNAs for degradation or translation repression. A variety of viral vectors can be used to obtain miRNA expression in cells including adeno-associated viruses (AAVs). AAV-mediated miRNA expression offers the opportunity to explore potential miRNA utilization for many gene therapy applications.
